If you walked away from this year’s eMarketer The Future of Digital summit with one key realization, it was likely this: AI isn't rewriting the marketing playbook on its own; consumers are.
As consumers seamlessly integrate LLMs into their daily lives, the way they search, discover, and build brand affinity is fundamentally changing. At Net Conversion, we recently wrapped up our 2026 MORE Intelligence Report, surveying 1,500 U.S. adults to decode today's consumer mindset. Comparing our research with the core takeaways from the eMarketer keynote reveals an unmistakable truth: we are entering a new era of search, full-funnel strategy, and critical marketing intelligence.
Here is what marketers need to know to prepare for 2027 and beyond.
1. Search is Reinventing Itself as a Full-Funnel Channel
For years, marketers treated search primarily as a lower-funnel performance engine, a place to capture high intent right before a transaction. But AI is completely dismantling that narrow view.
The reality is, search has always been a full-funnel experience, but it was historically relegated to the bottom of the funnel because it was simply easier to measure that way. Today, AI sits squarely in the discovery phase, the middle and top of the funnel, meaning our KPIs and media-buying models must evolve. Our research shows that AI expands the consideration set. 74% of consumers who use AI for purchase research say it introduces them to new brands during early-stage discovery.
Comparing AI-driven discovery to traditional search on an apples-to-apples basis does both channels an injustice. AI triggers mid-funnel research and demand for external validation. In fact, eMarketer highlighted that the average consumer path to purchase jumps from 4.1 touchpoints without AI to 12.2 touchpoints with AI. Marketers who continue to evaluate AI touchpoints solely on lower-funnel return metrics will miss its true value as a brand discovery driver.
2. AI Isn’t Making Marketers Lazy, It’s Elevating Strategic Thinking
There’s a common misconception that AI automation will reduce marketing to a set of automated prompts. This summit made one boundary abundantly clear: "You cannot get pattern-breaking thinking from a machine designed to complete the pattern."
AI is taking over operational, high-volume tasks like audience research (which accounts for ~38% of a marketer's daily workflow) and campaign measurement setup. By freeing teams from low-level execution, AI isn't an excuse to go on autopilot; it's an ignition switch for deeper strategic thinking.
Our data reveals that 54% of consumers use AI tools for purchase research, but 60% still double-check AI recommendations against brand sites, search engines, and real-world reviews. However, this creates a trust paradox: while 45% say an AI recommendation improves brand credibility, 54% say they trust a brand LESS if they spot AI-generated ads or creative content.
Consumers want AI working for them as an efficient assistant, but they demand human-led effort, transparency, and authenticity from the brands competing for their dollars. Strategy, critical thinking, and genuine human creativity are now your primary differentiators.
3. Cross-Channel Brand Equity & Loyalty Still Reign Supreme
With AI surfacing a broader array of choices, you might assume brand loyalty is dead. The opposite is true: brand equity matters more than ever.
AI builds an understanding of your brand from dozens of disparate signals: retailers, expert reviews, customer forums, social video, and publisher content. When an AI model surfaces a recommendation, consumers are far more likely to convert if it's a brand they already recognize and respect.
Our report found that 64% of consumers report stable year-over-year brand loyalty, but 70% operate as "conditional shoppers." They won't leave for no reason, but they will reward brands that respect their time, eliminate friction, and deliver transparent value.
Key Takeaway to Prep for 2027
The biggest takeaway from both The Future of Digital Summit and our own intelligence data isn't that technology is moving too fast; it's that the modern consumer has already adapted to it.
Shoppers are using AI to evaluate options faster, demand cross-channel proof before converting, and tune out low-effort, synthetic marketing. They haven't abandoned brand loyalty; they've simply raised the bar for who earns it.
Winning in this landscape doesn't require chasing every new AI tool or automated tactic. It requires a fundamental return to strategic excellence, such as grounding your media models in the full funnel and coupling automated operational scale with distinctly human storytelling.
The market isn't waiting for brands to catch up. By centering your strategy around current consumer intelligence, authentic brand equity, and full-funnel experiences, you won't just react to the changing landscape; you'll define it.
