Navigating the Industry: What Modern Brand Growth Actually Requires

Brett Hughes
October 27, 2026

Recently, the marketing industry has embraced hyper-targeted performance metrics. We optimized for immediate feedback through clicks, narrowed our audiences into algorithm silos, and quietly abandoned the humility of organic storytelling. Attending this year’s ANA Masters of Marketing right in our own backyard in Orlando alongside our Chief Growth Officer, a distinct shift was impossible to miss across the panels: the pendulum is swinging back.

‍

In the relentless pursuit of direct response, many brands sacrificed emotional connectivity and genuine cultural relevance. However, the data is clear: brands that build meaningful attachments with their audience are more likely to excel. Across sessions covering micro-series, AI-powered audience discovery, and answer engine optimization, a core unifying storyline emerges. The narrative shows that creative storytelling and brand intuition are reclaiming their spotlight, but they cannot work independently; an agile, transparent data foundation to measure and prove impact is imperative.

‍

The Micro-Series Revolution

‍

Marketers have fallen into the trap of treating social feeds as digital billboards, interrupting user attention rather than earning it. During the session, “From First Episode to Full-Funnel: Micro-Series on TikTok”, the conversation focused on a massive behavioral shift revolving around micro-dramas. Micro-dramas captured the attention of 66 million active viewers in the US alone. And these views aren't just mindless scrolling. They are binge-watching narrative arcs in vertical video format. For many brands and studios, micro-series prove that long-term brand value and lower-funnel conversions aren't mutually exclusive. When creative narrative leads, full-funnel outcomes follow suit.

‍

Scaling this type of episodic content, however, requires rapid creative iteration. If you don't have the flexibility to measure and track organic momentum and viewer retention, this content quickly becomes expensive dead ends.

‍

Prioritizing Humility Amongst the AI-Integration

‍

Another theme that has continued to saturate the industry with noise is brands' ability to incorporate AI and the opportunity cost of doing so; for example, leveraging AI to produce more assets faster, but without insights, creating second-rate content. Haleon's leaders demonstrated that AI can drive true brand innovation, not just shortcut content creation. By pairing AI with connected frameworks, they surfaced cultural blind spots and broke through stale legacy segmentation. Cultural relevance is no longer a subjective, “nice-to-have". In today's media ecosystem, performance marketing must track organic social speed and sentiment trajectory as concrete leading indicators of brand health.

‍

Answers Replace Links

‍

Despite all the AI advancements, one disruption continues in the industry: even the most sentimentally attuned message fails if your audience cannot find it. With media oversaturation and AI integration, discovery has fundamentally changed: answers are readily available and replacing link clicks (zero-click search continues to grow). Brands that show up in these answers earn positions that build over time. Getting cited by AI answer engines requires specialized content that is accurate, current, and appropriately structured wherever large language models live. Utilizing a high-velocity content supply chain, reliable source data, clear ownership, and measurement that reflects how discovery actually happens. Without an operational engine running quietly in the background, a brand’s creative asset remains invisible to the algorithms shaping modern consumer intent.

‍

So What Do We Take from This?

‍

We’ve heard these themes before, but what felt truly refreshing in Orlando was seeing leading brands actively engineer solutions through the noise. Above all, the agency-client dynamic is what truly moves the needle. For years, these partnerships centered on transactional ROAS targets across siloed performance channels. Today, long-term agency value and sustainable brand growth come from delivering the unfiltered truth across both brand attachment and performance signals. When agencies provide transparent visibility into how cultural relevance and organic momentum fuel bottom-line growth, the relationship evolves from vendor to genuine growth partner. Marketers still want to stand out, craft ambitious stories, and make bold emotional investments. An agile data foundation doesn’t constrain that creativity; it gives you the evidence-based certainty to trust it.

‍

Impactful marketing has always lived at the intersection of creativity and technological advancements. By grounding bold creative storytelling in an adaptable, dynamic engine, brands can stop chasing short-lived interactions and start developing durable, cumulative growth.
